When dramatic weather takes shape, Robert Remme stays put in his 10th-floor home Downtown – and this photograph is exactly why. On May 16, a spectacular lightning storm darkened and then lit up that Friday evening sky.

Remme’s favorite shot of the storm was in its aftermath as the setting sun poked through a gap in the deep, dark clouds. Plenty of recognizable secular Milwaukee landmarks are silhouetted in the gloom (we see you, City Hall), but it seems fitting that the eye is perhaps most drawn to the steeples of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church at the edges of the providential beam.
