The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has announced the death of another one of its K-9 officers.

The agency said Thursday morning that active K-9 officer Matyko died while being taken to a Huntsville veterinary hospital after suffering a medical emergency.

Matyko's service with the agency's highway patrol division began in 2019, and he worked in many areas of the state during his time on the force, including the Gadsden area.

While working, Matyko assisted the agency in narcotics detection and interdiction efforts, something ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said helped a countless number of operations.

"Matyko was more than a highly trained working dog; he was a trusted partner and valued member of our family," Taylor said
