ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ala. —

More work may be needed to fix a persistent sinkhole in St. Clair County.

The Alabama Department of Transportation said it is aware that the sinkhole on U.S. 231 near Alabama 174 north of Pell City continues to settle, which was expected after the original and temporary repairs.

ALDOT said further investigation is forthcoming and additional work will be done, if necessary.

Repairs were made earlier in August, and a previous repair made at the end of July failed, causing the sinkhole to reopen.

The transportation department said sinkholes are relatively common in Alabama because underground limestone deposits can dissolve over time and create voids.
