A federal grand jury returned a new indictment Thursday with upgraded charges against Teresa Youngblut, including accusing the Washington state resident of shooting and killing a Border Patrol agent in northern Vermont earlier this year.

It was not immediately clear if the new offenses carry the death penalty, though one of Youngblut’s attorneys said at a recent hearing that he expected the federal government to bring capital charges against his client.

Youngblut, 21, had previously been charged with firearms and assault charges in connection with a Jan. 20 shootout stemming from a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Coventry that resulted in the death of David “Chris” Maland , a Border Patrol agent.
