CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers ' bullpen ranks 27th in MLB with a 4.84 ERA since June 1, ahead of only the Minnesota Twins, Washington Nationals and Colorado Rockies.
It has been that bad.
Right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle — an 11-year MLB veteran whom the Tigers signed to a one-year, $7.5 million contract in January — is a microcosm of the struggles. He registered a dominant 1.35 ERA in his first 33⅓ innings this season, but has a 14.85 ERA in his past 13⅓ innings since late June.
Nothing suggests Kahnle, 36, will suddenly improve.
