Florida is giving a new boost to the everyday heroes who sustain our communities by offering potentially thousands of dollars toward the purchase of a new home.

Starting August 18, the state will reopen the Hometown Heroes Housing program , which offers up to $35,000 in assistance for purchasing a home to essential workers who meet certain requirements.

This year, the fund has $50 million available, half of the previous budget.

Who qualifies?

The program is aimed at individuals employed full-time in essential occupations such as:

Health: nurses, X-ray technicians, therapists, dentists.

Education: teachers, public school staff.

Public safety: police officers, firefighters, paramedics, 911 operators.

Justice and courts: judicial employees, correctional officers.

Childcare: workers
