MISSOURI (KFVS) - Health officials are warning everyone to use caution in light of a Missouri patient infected by a brain-eating amoeba .
At last check, the patient is in the ICU.
Doctors say the patient got infected after water skiing at the Lake of the Ozarks.
While the University of Missouri Health Care cannot confirm they are treating this patient for privacy reasons, Dr. Christian Rojas Morena, with MU Health Care, is an infectious disease expert and talked with us about the disease.
He said the symptoms are pretty much like meningitis.
“Headache, fever, stiff neck, vomiting, change in the mental status of the patient, confusion, coma, seizures, and usually the symptoms start between one and 12 days after exposure,” Dr. Rojas Morena explained.
