CARTHAGE, New York (WWNY) - A convicted sex offender is accused of breaking the law by posing as someone else on social media.
The Carthage Police Department said 28-year-old Brandon Chapel allegedly used an alias on a Facebook account without reporting it to the New York State Sex Offender Registry.
The Carthage man is charged with a felony count of violating the registry’s rules for a second time.
Police said Chapel is a Level 1 sex offender, someone the state considers to be at a low risk of committing another sex crime.
Chapel was arraigned in Watertown City Court and ordered held in the Jefferson County Jail on $1,000 bail.
