WASHINGTON (CNN) - Washington officials began clearing a homeless encampment on Thursday in the D.C. area.

The city stated that it had offered services and shelter to unhoused residents in the days leading up to the action and will continue to provide those resources.

This follows President Donald Trump’s executive action to crack down on crime and homelessness in D.C.

Trump suggested people could be relocated far outside the capital.

A social services advocate said moving people away from outreach workers and meal programs will interrupt services and traumatize them further.

The Executive Office of the Mayor in D.C. didn’t offer specifics on how many people live in the encampment or how long the clearing process will take.
