FARGO — As families prepare to send children back to school, doctors are reminding parents not to overlook one important step — making sure their kids are eating healthy food.
Giving a child healthy snacks can help them during the school day by preventing hunger and providing valuable nutrients for their growing bodies.
Small sandwich bags of fruits or vegetables are easy for a child to carry, and doctors say healthy snacking can help students stay on track in the classroom.
“When we think about healthy snacks, we really want to think about food as fuel. The whole reason that we eat food is for that fuel. So we want to make sure that we’re having the energy to stay focused throughout the school day,” said Kara Strum, a dietitian with Sanford Health.
