California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that his state would hold a special election on Nov. 4 to ask voters to approve a mid-decade redistricting plan.

“We can’t stand back and watch this democracy disappear district by district," said Gov. Gavin Newsom in a press conference on Aug. 14 to announce the vote on California's Election Rigging Response Act.

The proposed redrawn district maps could be released as early as Friday, Aug. 15, according to media reports.

For weeks, Newsom and California Democratic lawmakers have been floating plans for this mid-decade redistricting.
