Complete with a variety of food and cultural performances, the Indo-American Cultural Foundation of Central New Jersey will host its annual free India Independence Day event on Saturday.

Members of New Jersey’s Indian community — which is an estimated 427,286 — will gather at the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Vadtaldham temple, located at 1667 Amwell Rd., in Somerset.

India’s Independence Day — an annual national holiday celebrated on Aug. 15 — commemorates the end of Britain’s more than 200-year colonial rule over the people of India.

Over 75 years ago, India gained their independence on Aug. 15, 1947, marking a significant turning point in the country’s history following the decades long Indian Independence Movement .
