DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - A high risk of West Nile Virus is present across the state.

In Iowa, West Nile Virus transmission typically peaks in August and September.

According to Iowa State University, statewide mosquito surveillance is showing “the highest West Nile virus activity at this point in the summer in more than two decades.”

Due to the high risk of the virus across the state, The Polk County Public Health Department is urging Iowans to take extra precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

To protect yourself from mosquito bites, consider:

Using EPA-registered bug spray

Wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks when outside

Treating clothing and gear with permethrin
