In the midst of a federal takeover of her 3,100-person police department, and as federal immigration agents and hundreds of National Guard troops began patrolling D.C. neighborhoods, Mayor Muriel Bowser jetted off to Martha’s Vineyard.
Daniel Gleick, a spokesperson for the mayor’s office, tells City Paper that Bowser left for the popular vacation island Wednesday, Aug. 13, and plans to return to D.C. Friday.
NBC Washington reporter Mark Segraves was first to break the news on social media. Bowser explained the trip in a tweet on Thursday evening:
“Friends — as you know, I am both a mom and a mayor, raising a delightful 7 year old on my own. This week, I cancelled a scheduled family trip to lead our city’s crisis management efforts. I also made the more difficult decision to not disrupt
