East of Wall ***

It’s not easy to navigate between “naturalistic” and “amateurish,” so all credit to writer/director Kate Beecroft for taking a story that could have coasted on its authenticity, and allowing it to remain engaging as genuine filmmaking. Beecroft casts real-life South Dakota horse rancher Tabatha Zimiga and her daughter Porshia as same-named version of themselves, trying to scratch out a living from selling horses and rodeoing after the death of Tabatha’s most recent husband and Porshia’s stepfather, while Tabatha tries to support her own ki: ds and several locals left effectively parentless by substance abuse or incarceration.
