WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — With Wichita students back in school and high school sports practices set to start next week, the American Red Cross is urging athletes, parents, and coaches to watch for the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

“It is so important to respond to things that you’re feeling when you’re out in the heat,” said Logan Wright, regional communications manager for the Red Cross in Kansas and Oklahoma. “You can get very overheated very quickly in these temperatures, especially if you’re doing something really intensive like sports.”

The Red Cross recommends drinking a cup of water every 20 minutes, even for experienced athletes, and mixing in sports drinks for electrolytes. Practices should be held early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hottest parts o
