LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A new study from Michigan State University’s advertising and public relations professors claims consumers don’t have a full understanding of what “Made in USA” really means.
The conclusion comes from a 2020 survey that analyzed 131 adult “consumers’ attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors of ‘Made in USA’ claims.”
Dr. Patricia Huddleston is a professor at Michigan State University and a co-author of the study. She said the label is an advertising tool that can mislead consumers and doesn’t align with their expectations.
“Made in the USA laws are divided into the labeling of the product and advertising. The labels, as long as a majority of a product is assembled in the USA, even if it’s of foreign-made parts, it can be labeled ”Made in the USA,” said Huddleston.
