SUMTER, S.C. — The superintendent for the Sumter School District has resigned less than a month into the new school year.

The district announced Thursday night that Dr. William Wright is no longer with the district.

"This evening, Superintendent Dr. William Wright asked to be released from his employment contract with Sumter School District," said Sumter School Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Shawn Ragin in a statement. "The Board agreed to his resignation effective immediately."

Ragin said that the terms of Dr. Wright's resignation will be released in the coming days. "On behalf of the board, I know we wish him well in his future endeavors," Ragin added.
