CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Starting around the month of August, experts typically see fluctuations of bacteria levels across the Lowcountry.
Experts said this time of year often brings high bacteria levels due to rain and flooding events. Charleston Waterkeeper tests water quality in the area every week, sending out two teams via boat or land. The report identifies areas as green, which is good, or red, which can be dangerous.
"Every Wednesday, May through October, we hit 20 different recreation hot spots throughout our estuary, throughout our creeks and rivers," Andrew Wunderley, executive director of Charleston Waterkeeper, said.
