KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One person is dead following a crash involving two semi trucks in Franklin County, Kansas Thursday morning.

The crash was reported around 10:30 a.m. on Interstate 35, just south of Sand Creek Road near Ottawa, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

According to KHP, the driver of one semi was traveling northbound in the outside lane for an unknown reason, the driver drifted through the inside lane, crossing he median, and went into the southbound lanes.

A second semi driver traveling southbound saw the other semi crossing the median and tried to avoid a crash by going into the grass, according to KHP.

KHP said the first semi struck the other one and became fully engulfed.
