Gov. Ron DeSantis announced plans to open a second state-run immigration detention facility at the vacant Baker Correctional Institution, while the legal battle to shut down "Alligator Alcatraz" continues.

He’s dubbing the new detention center in North Florida, “Deportation Depot.”

The governor had previously suggested Camp Blanding, a Florida National Guard training site between Jacksonville and Gainesville, as the potential location for a second detention facility.

But on Thursday, he said the Camp Blanding runway wasn’t equipped for larger aircraft, and he pointed out the empty state prison west of Jacksonville is near the Lake City Gateway Airport.

"We want a process, stage, and then return illegal aliens to their home country," DeSantis said. "That is the name of the game."
