BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - Horn Island — remote, wild, untouched. In its stillness, a discovery small in size, but enormous in meaning.
“I just remember it was in the sand,” explained Becky Copeland. “It wasn’t anything like I had to do any digging.”
Copeland is a wildlife biologist with the Gulf Islands National Seashore. She was on the island doing bird research when she spotted a lost high school ID card in the sand. The card was weathered, aged, and barely legible.
“Lots of things wash up on the islands,” Copeland added. “I find messages in bottles a lot... Her name, Catherine? Right there. And the information, her date of birth, was there. That’s when I became an internet detective and tried to find any way I could to find out who she was and how I could get it back to her.”
