COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - There’s been a recent uptick in law enforcement presence at recreational parks in Columbus, with deputies working to decrease crime in the areas.
As of July 1, 12 Muscogee County Sheriff deputies are taking on the task, prompted by several shootings over the past two years.
Major John Thomas said he hopes this security measure brings residents confidence that they can go and enjoy their time at the park. He said this initiative is meant to curb gang activity, shootings, and unplanned social gatherings.
“We are covering the parks at some capacity seven days a week, and those hours from day to day will vary; however, we will have that presence there,” said Thomas.
