OLATHE, Kan. —

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating four Kansas school districts at the request of Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach on concerns of violations of Title IX and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

The education department announced Thursday it is investigating Shawnee Public Schools, Olathe Public Schools, Topeka Public Schools and the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools. The Office for Civil Rights and the Student Privacy Police Office are the offices leading the investigations. Advertisement

The initial complaint came from the Defense of Freedom Institute, which alleged that the districts’ policies allowed students to participate in sports and use facilities like bathrooms or locker rooms "based on 'gender identity' rather than biological sex
