BUFFALO, N.Y. — Starting next month, National Grid customers across Western New York will start to see their electric bills increase — with new rate hikes following out in three phases over the next three years.

The Public Service Commission unanimously approved the rate hike Thursday, which will take effect September 1. For the average customer, electric bills will rise about $25 a month by the end of the phase-in period.
The changes will come in three installments:
National Grid spokesperson David Bertola said the additional revenue will go toward replacing aging infrastructure — some of it 60 to 70 years old — and preparing for future demand from electric vehicles and electric heating.
