The uprooting of Japanese Canadians in World War II will be discussed in a new seminar hosted by the Surrey Archives.
The Archives will host author Sally Ito, an adjunct professor of English at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, for a virtual talk Sept. 4.
The talk will focus on Ito's family memoir from 2018 titled "The Emperor’s Orphans."
"For me, writing is a process of discovery," Ito said in a press release from the Archives about the online lecture. "I also learned empathy by understanding my family members as ‘characters’ whose temperaments and personalities I got to know better through writing in their voices as I imagined them.”
Some of Ito's family members were part of approximately 4,000 Japanese Canadians who were deported to Japan
