BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Drowning in medical debt? If you live in Vermont, you may not have to worry anymore. Tens of thousands of Vermonters are in medical debt, but a new law passed by the legislature this year will bring relief for over 60,000 of them.
Low credit scores, being scared to check the mail, not going to the doctor because of a fear of incurring more debt, these are symptoms Treasurer Mike Pieciak says those with medical debt are currently facing.
“By eliminating that medical debt for 65,000 Vermonters, it really provides that financial benefit, but also that health outcome benefit,” said Pieciak.
One million dollars appropriated to the treasurer’s office will be re-purposed to eliminate up to $100 million in Vermonter’s medical debt.
