Blue and yellow flags flapped in the wind Thursday evening as hundreds of Fairbanksans lined the Cushman Street bridge and declared their support for Ukraine.
The demonstration aimed to show Alaska's support for Ukraine and opposition to President Donald Trump hosting talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday in Anchorage. Trump and Putin are expected to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not been invited to the summit.
Demonstrators chanted "Alaska stands with Ukraine" and "Putin is not welcome here," and carried signs stating "dictators go home," "JBER was built to counter Putin, not host him" and "Putin plays Trump like a fiddle."
