President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are both overplaying their hand as if they hold all the cards in deciding how the Russian invasion of Ukraine ends. Their meeting in Alaska is a summit of delusion.

Trump has been much weaker on aid to Ukraine than Joe Biden. Now European nations are providing most military and financial aid and Ukrainian combat innovations have kept the Russians bogged down in a stalemate.

Going on four years of battle and Russia hasn’t taken Ukraine but has lost an estimated million men, killed or wounded so badly to be unfit for fighting. The tanks, ships, and planes Russia began its invasion with have been pulverized by the Ukrainians, and the Russian economy has plunged, taking quality of life along with it.
