“War is hell.”
I can’t say for sure how many times it was described that way to me in the interviews.
In just those words.
But it was enough times that it got my attention. And even when those exact words weren’t used, the sentiment was still communicated.
“War is hell.”
Seeing that hell through the eyes of those who were there was one of the reasons we undertook a project in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Our WWII Veterans Remember series, and the companion book that was later released, was an effort to capture the testimonies of the war generation to keep them from being lost. As part of the project, I’d eventually interview well over 100 WWII veterans from across the Tulsa area.
