WASHINGTON —
President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are meeting on Friday at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska , and will discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
But what's expected out of the face-to-face, high-stakes summit remains unclear. Trump has offered shifting and often contradictory goals leading up to his sit-down with Putin.
Meanwhile, the White House has branded the meeting as a "listening" or "feel-out" exercise, although Trump has said he would know if a peace deal was possible within the "first two minutes."
Trump later added a new threat, warning of "very severe consequences" if Putin does not agree to end the war, while preparing to set up another meeting that would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy .
