John David Spence, a world-renowned London neurologist, researcher and founder of Robarts Research Institute’s Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre, has died at 80.

He was a “visionary scientist,” said Dr. John Yoo, dean of Western University ’s Schulich school of medicine and dentistry.

“(His) research changed stroke care forever,” he said. “He also inspired generations of researchers and trainees through decades of leadership” at Western and its medical school.

“His loss is felt deeply across our community,” Yoo said.
