As reported in The Plain Dealer last month, Eastern Michigan University has launched an ad campaign to attract Ohio students, citing the odious Ohio Senate Bill 1 , the new law that attacks academic freedom at public universities. EMU instead offers Ohioans “freedom to grow” without “restrictions” and allows in-state tuition for its neighbors to the south.

Good for EMU. Predictably, Ohio Sen. Jerry Cirino, the Lake County Republican who gave us SB 1, is miffed at this “terrible” marketing plan. “Do they really want to start that with us,” he sniffed. “Because that can play both ways.”

What’s Cirino’s ad going to say? “Come to Ohio, where critical thinking dies?”

What Cirino sees as a shot across the bow of Ohio is really a lifeline for Ohio students.
