In 1530, Ivan the Terrible, Czar of Muscovy, was born. He ascended to the Russian throne at the age of three and eventually became the first czar. Ivan laid the foundations for the Russian empire but in 1560 embarked on a rampage of murder and destruction, even murdering his son and only heir.

In 1560, Protestantism was formally adopted at the First General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. The Scottish Parliament had earlier voted to accept a Calvinist confession of faith, declaring that the Roman Catholic pope no longer had jurisdiction over Scotland.

In 1760, Fort Levis near Prescott, Ont., above the St. Lawrence rapids, was taken by British Gen. Jeffrey Amherst in France's last stand in North America.
