Just under two years ago, the Michigan football team was first put under investigation by the NCAA for its sign stealing scandal. The scandal was connected to former staffer Connor Stalions who was running an illegal scouting operation . Stalions resigned as an analyst from the team just over two weeks after the initial report.

Former Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh served a self-imposed three-game suspension to open the year for recruiting violations and, due to the sign stealing scandal, Harbaugh and Michigan accepted another three-game suspension for the final three games of the regular season. This second suspension was imposed by the Big Ten for violation of the conference’s sportsmanship policy.
