TYLER, Texas — The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a sharp increase in thefts involving Side by Side (SxS) vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility task vehicles (UTVs).

So far in 2025, 10 of these vehicles have been reported stolen in the county, according to the sheriff’s office. Only two have been recovered, including one case where a neighbor reported a suspicious high-end SxS at a nearby home.

Investigators say thieves are targeting vehicles from locked buildings, attached carports and large, secluded properties. Surveillance video shows many suspects on-site for less than two minutes before leaving with the vehicle.
