A question mark has been placed against the participation of Edinburgh tennis ace Jacob Fearnley in this year’s US Open which gets underway at Flushing Meadow, New York, next week.

The 24-year-old US based player dropped down to a challenger event in South Carolina this week following three first round exits on the premier ATP tour.

He looked well placed to advance to the second round in straight sets against Australia’s James McCabe in the First Serve Open when serving for the match when suddenly he squatted on the baseline in apparent distress.

It was not clear if it was a heat issue or an injury as Jacob seemed ill-at-ease on his feet with an apparent limp.

Unable to serve out successfully he surrendered the set 7-5 a few minutes later and immediately retired.
