DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) - The City of Dubuque is being fined $7,000 for repeated violations of sewage being released into the Mississippi River.
The self-reported violations took place from 2020 through 2024 at the City of Dubuque Water and Resource Recovery Center (WRRC). According to the city, the WRRC serves as the city’s wastewater treatment facility.
The facility holds a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, which allows treated wastewater to be returned to the Mississippi River. In order to keep the permit, the city must meet over 2,000 permit conditions every year, including “sampling, monitoring, and discharge limits,” as stated by the city. These conditions ensure that the water returned to the Mississippi is safe.
72 permit violations were self-reported
