If I didn’t already know Chicago was a metal town, its response to Ozzy Osbourne’s death would’ve convinced me. In the days after July 22, I heard Black Sabbath and Ozzy blasting from storefronts and car stereos across the city—and it wasn’t just the usual suspects in black band shirts cranking up the tunes. I hope some of the folks who’ve seized on the passing of the Prince of Darkness as a way to remind themselves that they love metal will hold fast to the feeling and bring it into Chicago’s live music scene.
