SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

The Sacramento City Council this week honored a building inspector who was credited with evacuating a building moments before a dangerous roof collapse.

Dan Lowther was named the Community Development Department employee of the year for 2025 after having earlier been nominated by his coworkers as an employee of the month.

Tom Pace, the director of community development for the city, said during this week’s council meeting that Lowther had responded to a call from the fire department about a building with potential roof damage.

“While they were in the building, he observed that you could actually hear the sound of the beam cracking and making sounds that were pretty alarming,” Pace said.
