When gunfire ripped through a crowded Sweet 16th birthday party in Dadeville in April 2023, four people were killed and dozens more were wounded.

In the aftermath, six young men, ages 15 to 20, were arrested and each charged with four counts of reckless murder. Despite the severity of the charges they faced, each was afforded a right to stand before a judge and seek youthful offender status, a designation that would have plucked them out of a standard trial path and instantly throttle their potential sentences to no more than three years.
