Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has discontinued an investigation into the hospitalization of a 23-year-old man in Stratford.

In the early afternoon of June 8, the man was arrested by Stratford Police Service officers in the parking lot of Giant Tiger, following calls to police regarding a domestic assault.

He was transported to the police station and lodged in cells. During his detention, the man became emotional, exhibiting episodes of crying and agitation. He was observed kicking the bed, striking the floor with his hands, and repeatedly hitting his head against the cell wall, SIU officials said in a media release.

The man was later found unresponsive during a routine check. He was taken to hospital, where he was treated for a drug overdose.
