The Sarnia-area’s unemployment rate was the highest in the region in May.
The local rate was 10.1 per cent, compared to 9.4 per cent in neighbouring Chatham-Kent and 10 per cent in Windsor-Essex, said the Sarnia-Lambton Workforce Development Board.

The latest national unemployment rate, 6.9 per cent for July, was announced last week by Statistics Canada.
Sarnia-area unemployment numbers haven’t been reported by Statistics Canada for many years, so the board hires Metro Economics to “extrapolate” the local statistics from the national data, said board executive director Mikelle Bryson-Campbell.
May’s is the latest local rate available.
Compared to May 2024, “we have a slightly higher unemployment rate and it is the highest in our economic region, but only slightly,”
