SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Congressman Richard Neal was in Springfield on Friday, commemorating Thursday’s 90th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act.

The measure was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14th, 1935 to help people age 65 or older with supplemental income after retirement.

In Massachusetts, nearly one in five residents, more than one million people, receive social security payments.
