CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Weather conditions in West Virginia have flipped to the "dry" mode after a wet July, leaving forecasters now hearing words like drought and fire risk instead of flash flooding.

While current conditions don't yet constitute a drought, they may develop into one if the dry weather continues.

"July was very wet across the area of West Virginia," Jeremy Michael, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said. "Most of the area had roughly six to 10 inches of rain, but as we started the first couple weeks of August, it's been pretty dry across the state."

August is typically the start of the dry season in West Virginia, with the rainy season usually ending in late July.
