A man from Malta died Thursday in a single vehicle crash south of his hometown.

The 40-year-old was traveling alone on a rural road in Phillips County, according to a statement from Montana Highway Patrol. Thursday’s crash is the fifth fatal wreck in Montana so far in August.

On Thursday morning, the 40-year-old was at the wheel of a pickup truck heading south on Sun Prairie Road in the southern part of Phillips County. The truck left the road and overturned, according to MHP. First responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

While the investigation into the wreck is still ongoing, speeding and intoxication are suspected to have been factors. It is currently unknown whether the man was wearing a seat belt, and the road where the crash occurred was clear and dry.
