With Ontario losing the equivalent of five family farms per week, Ward 6 Coun. Jamie Lee questioned whether approving a subdivision on 4.4 hectares of agricultural land was setting a slippery slope in Welland.

Lee referenced provincial statistics, which show agricultural land being lost to urbanization at a rate of 70 hectares per day, or about five family farms every week.

On Tuesday, city councillors approved a rezoning request for 960 Clare Ave. The property will be redesignated to special policy low-density greenfield residential and special policy medium-density residential, replacing the previous zoning of low-density greenfield residential and environmental conservation.

It was agricultural in the city’s zoning bylaw.
