WASHINGTON — The Department of Education says it will move to halt federal funding for Northern Virginia school districts that remain defiant over bathroom rights for transgender students.

“The Agency will commence Administrative proceedings to effect the suspension or termination of federal financial assistance to these divisions. The Virginia districts will have to defend their embrace of radical gender ideology over ensuring the safety of their students,” Deputy Assistant Secretary for Communications Madi Biedermann said.

School districts in Northern Virginia were uniting against a Department of Education order demanding they follow federal restrictions on which bathrooms transgender students can enter.

The school districts have argued they have been following the law.
