LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. ( WWSB ) - Before 2016, Longboat Key area was swarming with beautiful bright peacocks.

Residents of the town were torn on whether they were a nuisance or a welcome addition to the agriculture.

If you take a drive on the key today, these birds are few and far between, all of this because of a commission-sponsored act to appease the neighbors and lower the peacock population.

The neighbors were complaining for several reasons:

Segway tours would guide visitors through neighborhoods and private property to take a peek at these beautiful birds. Neighbors were frustrated that these tours would block the roads and their own private property.

Neighbors also complained that the peacocks would get confused by their reflection in the chrome on cars and start to peck at it,
