NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell , becoming the first sitting mayor in city history to face federal charges.

The allegations span from an October 2021 personal relationship with former bodyguard and ex-NOPD officer Jeffrey Vappie to misuse of city funds for at least 14 out-of-state trips and the Pontalba apartment.

Prosecutors also claim Cantrell deleted electronic evidence, made false statements to investigators, and was involved in bribery-related controversies dating back to 2019.

The superseding indictment in August 2025 charges her and Vappie with conspiracy, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and false statements.
